Karen and Larry’s Story
Sometimes we hear stories that change how we think. Sometimes we have the privilege to be part of those stories. Here at Ralph Scott Lifeservices, we are part of the everyday success in real people’s lives--people who are part of our community, or who could be our neighbor, maybe a person we see in the grocery store, and people that we may know by name. This is a story about Larry and Karen Pritchett. They receive services from Ralph Scott Lifeservices and are part of the Alamance County community
Larry met his beloved, Karen, while they both lived in New York City. They both attended a day program on Fridays. After dating for a while and getting permission from Karen’s parents, they were married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York in 1994.
Karen’s sister came to visit from North Carolina and encouraged them to move to North Carolina, saying that they could get better help here. Through Orange Enterprises, Larry was given the number to Ralph Scott Lifeservices. After talking with RSL staff, a visit was set up, which led to a move to RSL’s duplex apartment in the summer of 2001 where the Pritchetts began a new life in a new state.
Although the Pritchetts enjoyed living and receiving services from our organization, they missed a big city feel and wanted better public transportation options, which led to a move to Greensboro, NC, in 2008. Greensboro was not what they envisioned. Larry struggled to find services and professional supports, and bus stops were far away from their residence. Because of health and emotional concerns, his Care Coordinator suggested they consider moving back to Alamance County, where they knew he could receive the help he needed in all areas of his life.
The Prichetts moved back to Burlington, NC, in 2010 and were able to find an apartment and receive minimal services with Ralph Scott Lifeservices. Shortly after their move, construction began on the Duncan apartments on Trollinger Street, and Larry and Karen’s lives went through a boost for the better. Larry was able to receive the services he needed. He obtained a full array of services. Karen began receiving the services she need also through Ralph Scott Lifeservices. She was able to acquire the care that was really important for her.
Once both Larry and Karen were receiving services and care, their support teams saw dramatic differences in their lives. They both currently have jobs in the community. They both attend a faith-based day program of their choice during the week. They have a community of friends and people who care about them. Larry is working toward improving his health and has lost around 40 lbs. with continued progression in his lifestyle and eating habits. Although Larry, at times, continues to struggle, this couple is happy. They are involved and part of their community. They are safe and stable in their environment.
The Pritchetts are successful because of the help they were able to receive, as well as their courage to change their lives and seek help. Two hours of assistance a day from Ralph Scott Lifeservices has made an incredible difference in these people’s lives. All of the factors that go into helping someone grow, stay healthy, have dignity, stability, choices, community involvement, and to feel cared about are everything that RSL stands for. Knowing that we helped make a difference in the Pritchett’s lives has been the ultimate and ongoing reward.
