Maria’s Story
Success is often measured for people in different ways. We often think of the final outcome and focus less on the journey. However, at Ralph Scott Lifeservices we believe the journey and the small steps to success are the most important. The ability to look back and see those small victories and progress is something we want for each individual we serve. Here is a success story that clearly celebrates those small steps and one woman’s journey.
On, 2006 Maria Perez began her journey with Ralph Scott Lifeservices, Inc. as she transitioned from foster care to group living. At the age of 18, she had so many aspirations, hopes, and dreams as she navigated this new and unknown adventure.
Over the past 18 years, Maria has achieved numerous milestones, guided by a PATH plan that helped her identify and prioritize her most important life goals. This process assisted her in pursuing independence, education, and citizenship. In 2007, she was offered her first job as a receptionist at Ralph Scott Lifeservices, Inc., a position she proudly holds to this day. Paid employment has been crucial in boosting her confidence. With support from her coordinator and direct support staff, Maria began studying for her citizenship test and officially became a U.S. Citizen on September 20, 2010.
Maria continues to dream of becoming an interpreter and has taken many steps toward this goal, including being accepted as a student at Alamance Community College. She is eager to work towards her dream of a career as a translator and to promote her culture by mastering her native language.
Music is a significant part of Maria’s life, encompassing her love for singing and attending concerts. Some of her favorite memories include attending Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson concerts. Maria is a passionate singer who has performed with the Celebrations Singers group and at the annual Peer Council talent show. In 2013, she won first place by singing a song from her favorite artist, Mary J. Blige. Maria continues to enjoy participating in this talent show, consistently placing high for her singing talents.
A strong self-advocate and active member of the RSL Peer Council, Maria was nominated by her peers to become President of the council in both 2016 and 2020. As a founding member and one of the first self-advocates to participate in this group, Maria has demonstrated a powerful voice in advocating for herself and others.
It is evident when speaking to Maria that she meets friends everywhere she goes. When asked about her hopes for the near future, she shared her desire for more alone time to help her achieve her goal of living independently. She dreams of having her own apartment with a pet rabbit. Maria is passionate about her culture and wants to learn to cook more Hispanic meals. She also hopes to take another trip to the beach with her friends for a vacation. At Ralph Scott Lifeservices, Inc., we have no doubt that Maria will accomplish all her goals and more. We are fortunate to witness and contribute to her successes.
